Spartacus: Blood and Sand is usually an American television series in which premiered on Starz in January 22, 2010. The series was inspired from the historical figure of Spartacus (performed by Andy Whitfield), a Thracian gladiator exactly who from 73 to 71 BC led an essential slave uprising against the actual Roman Republic. Executive producers Steven Ohydrates. DeKnight and Robert Tapert aimed at structuring the events associated with Spartacus’ obscure early life leading up to the beginning of fantastic records. The show has been rated TV-MA for artwork violence, strong sexual content, and coarse language.

The show was initially renewed for the second season, but production was delayed because Whitfield was identified as having early-stage non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Because of the postpone, Starz produced a six-episode prequel series, entitled Spartacus: Gods of the Market. Pre-production of season 2 began after the announcement that Whitfield has been cancer-free. However, his cancer recurred, so Starz replaced Whitfield (in reference to his consent) with acting professional Liam McIntyre, who will play Spartacus intended for season two, to be titled Spartacus: Vengeance. Andy Whitfield died on September 11, 2011.

The story begins with the unnamed Thracian’s involvement inside an unit of Roman auxiliary within a campaign against the Getae (Dacian tribes that occupied the parts of the Lower Danube, in what today is Romania) under the command of the legatus, Claudius Glaber. In 72-71 BC, Roman general Marcus Terentius Varro Lucullus, proconsul of the Roman land of Macedonia, marched against the Getae, who were allies regarding Rome’s enemy, Mithridates VI of Pontus. The Getae frequently raid the actual Thracians’ lands, so the Thracians are usually persuaded by Glaber to enlist from the Romans’ service as auxiliaries. Glaber is persuaded through his wife Ilithyia to find greater glory, decides to break away attacking the Getae and also directly confront the forces of Mithridates in Most of asia Minor. The Thracian, feeling betrayed, leads a mutiny in opposition to Glaber, and returns to locate his village destroyed. The Thracian and his wife Sura, are captured by Glaber the following day; the Thracian is condemned to die inside gladiator arena for the crime, while Sura is removed, condemned to slavery. The Thracian is shipped to Capua in Italy, a center of gladiator training. Against all odds in the arena he slays the four gladiators appointed to help execute him and becomes an instant sensation with the crowd. Senator Albinius commutes the particular punishment from death to help slavery. The prisoner’s true label unknown, Lentulus Batiatus, the owner of the ludus in Capua, suggests to name him “Spartacus”, because he fought like the ferocious Thracian king of their name.

Noting well the Thracian’s intense raw talent and popularity with the masses, Batiatus purchases him for training from the walls of his ludus beneath the tutelage of Doctore, a former gladiator as well as fellow slave. He is befriended by Varro, a Roman who marketed himself into slavery to be able to pay his debts and support his family. He is harassed through more senior gladiators, notably Crixus, an undefeated Gaul, and Barca, a Carthaginian.
